Baptism
Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? Therefore we have been buried with him by baptism into death, so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life. For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. We know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body of sin might be destroyed, and we might no longer be enslaved to sin (Romans 3:3-6).
In the early days of the Church, new Christians were baptized by immersion. They entered a pool, stripped of their clothes and were submerged in its waters. They understood that this symbolized that they were dying to their former sinful selves and were being buried in the water to rise as Christ did to a new life. When they left the water, they put on white garments to show that they were alive with new life in Christ.
This practice symbolized most strikingly, what Our Lord does for us in Baptism. Through the waters of Baptism He washes away our sins and gives us new life. Bay Baptism Christ unites us to the Trinity and gives us a share in the grace he earned by His life, death and resurrection.
“The Sacrament of Baptism is the basis of the whole Christian life, the gate to life in the Spirit…and the door which gives access to the other Sacraments. Through Baptism we are freed from sin and reborn as children of God; we become members of Christ, are incorporated into the Church and made sharers in her mission: ‘Baptism is the sacrament of rebirth through water in the word’” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1213).
At St. Aidan Parish, Baptism is celebrated monthly on Sunday, except during the Season of Lent. Please call the parish office at 734-425-5950 to request the Sacrament of Baptism.
